Craving water cool and trickling
Fall free, fountain, deliver me
Fiery heat, summer nausea
Let me gulp, swallow, refreshed be…
Mind’s eye sees waterfall cascading
Like bridal veil or hard rain teeming
Swirly rivulets on windowpane
Rivers running clear, cold, swift
Simple cup… I won’t let drop drip
Perhaps will spill on fevered skin
Stinging-hot with syrupy sweat…
Brain near fried, hallucinates
Great storm clouds tearing open
To restore this Summer’s theft
And I… I sit crouched over
Puddle (that is not real)
Hoard small palmful
Of tepid drink poured
From fine crystal goblet
Shimmering so near…
For, surely half-crazed now
I squint at oasis, rippling mirage
‘Mid horizon’s orange flame
Recall song ’bout a wishing well—
Lord, carry me to the well
That won’t ever run dry:
You are Living Water
The Fountain of Life
And River of Delights♥
