She was always shy

More than that, wary

And with good reason

All of it secret…

Because she was odd—eyes

Down as if to make herself

Invisible—everybody thought

Her stuck-up, snobby, snooty

Aloof…but she wasn’t, she

Simply didn’t fit anywhere

Was well aware of it…

Some 50 years later she

Wondered why people made

Superficial judgments—

Why hadn’t anyone asked

If she believed herself

Better than everyone?

But would she have had

Courage to speak the truth:

“No, I don’t…I’m just scared.”
