I’m pleased to be back here with Marsha and WQW! The concept of adding quotations (or songs) to whatever art we share thrills my English Major heart…and allows me to browse Bartlett’s Quotations at rich leisure.
Now before everyone thinks I’ve lost my mind entirely due to heatstroke, I’m gonna tell y’all why I chose the song I’ve included.
- Don’t blink, you’ll miss it—this song uses the word “lake” only one time…at the beginning. I’d have preferred some repetition of it, but we don’t get everything we want in life.
- With most of the world languishing in the intense, uninvited, unappreciated HEAT—I thought a winter song full of snow might cool us down a bit (if you play it over and over, focused on the exquisite video).
- Lastly, I like Sarah McLachlan very much. It’s a winter/Christmas song, and mournful, but I like that too. (I’m itching to start decorating for the holidays!) Her song follows my poem.
~~*~~
We were younger then
Close sisters…closer than now
Summers were the lakes
Wherever family traveled…
Single sparkling memory:
Us sitting on dock
Together, dangling our feet
Away from others—
Otis Redding’s song was big
We began singing lyrics:
“I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh
I’m just sittin’ on the dock of the bay
Wastin’ time”*
It didn’t matter
That our dock was lakeside, and
Otis had the bay…
We had space to be happy
Silly…floating young girls dreams…
We were clueless…for
Time, Life would leave us estranged…
Blissful ignorance

I love your poem, and the music is wonderful. Lakes can be enjoyed in summer or winter, and so far no one has even leaned away from summer. I think I spent more time ice skating on lakes in the winter in Indiana than swimming in them in the summer.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I spent 9 yrs of my childhood in Minnesota–lots of lakes, and also near the Canadian border. I failed at ice skating, and we didn’t swim either…Dad was into fishing…I was not!
