It was too crucial
Decades ago, to be dazzling
Beauty was key that opened
The best doors
Or so I believed…
Good looks had power
To take you places
Career advancement
VIP events
Parties, friends… Love
The World’s values
Are deceitful
Illusion
Quicksilver
“Dazzling” was a pit
I fell into
And nearly died

I think that is the pit most of us fell into as young women. We learned it from our Barbie dolls. As we got older, it became important to keep our looks to maintain jobs and I always wanted to look good for my students. As an older adult, it’s great to be healthy! That’s taking up a lot of time!

Yes, Barbie dolls–and the TV shows of that era really set us up for a fall.😊

I think society is much more accepting of most body shapes now except that they need to BE in shape. There is not much acceptance for extreme obesity in young people both men and women. And that comes at a time when obesity in young people is at an all time high.

Unfortunately, understanding the phrase (beauty is only skin deep) didn’t ring a bell until I matured. Your poem is both concise and powerful.
Thank you for your kind comments on my post. I, too am a poet.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I think the folks who chase after physical beauty are headed for disappointment–and I didn’t “get it” till I was older and saw the Light!
